Passing of Commissioner Johnnie Sampson

It is with great sadness that the Craven County Democratic Party acknowledges the death of Commissioner Johnnie Sampson.  He passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020 due to COVID.  He is survived by his wife, Reverend Ethel Sampson, their children and grandchildren.

Commissioner Sampson was a respected leader in our community for several decades. He has been referred to as a Gentle Giant. Johnnie Sampson served with distinction as a member of the Craven County Board of Commissioner in December, 1996. He was a native of Craven County and his civic involvements were numerous, including Craven County Voters’ League, Concerned Citizens, NAACP, and the Duffyfield Residents’ Council. He and “Miss Ethel Belle” were the first recipients of the Craven County Democratic Party’s William Wainwright Award for their devotion to the community and the ideals Rep. Wainwright embodied.

Please keep his family in your thoughts as they grieve the loss of the family patriarch. We will provide updates on services as we learn about them.
